Windows License Manager Installation
This page provides information concerning the license manager installation and is aimed at users who are familiar with FLEXnet Publisher (formerly known as FLEXlm).
For users unfamiliar with this software, we recommend using the license manager install program. See Installing Network Licensing for details
Overview
If you are familiar with FLEXnet Publisher, you may prefer to install the license manager manually. In fact this will be your only choice if you are using a three way redundant server or if you wish to run a single license manager process to serve license for multiple vendors applications.
If the special circumstances described above do not apply to you, we would still recommend using the automatic installer. The section below Install Program - What Does it Do? explains in detail what the automatic installer does.
Manual Installation
The following describes the manual installation procedure. Please do not use this method unless you are very knowledgeable about FLEXnet publisher.
- Download the license manager files from here
- Copy file within to a suitable folder
- Copy the license file to the same folder as the program files
- Edit license file to enter correct hostname on the SERVER line
- If you are using a license locked to a USB key (dongle), install its driver. You can obtain this from here
- Setup the license manager as a Windows NT Service. You can do this simply by running the supplied program "InstallService" from a command prompt. You can also use lmtools to set up a service although we don't recommend this method
Install Program - What Does it Do?
The automatic installer (see Installing Network Licensing) performs the following actions
- Tests for any existing SIMetrix-SIMPLIS license manager by attempting to check out a test license. Result of test is used later in the install sequence
- Asks the user for a license file
- Parses license file to check that it is valid for SIMetrix and the host machine. An error will be displayed if it is not. The installer will not continue until a valid license file is supplied
- If the license file is locked to a USB key, the installer will test to see if any USB key is already plugged in to the host computer. If there is not it will install the USB key driver
- If the license file is locked to a USB key and there is either no USB key already plugged in, or there is but it is the wrong one, the user is prompted to plug in the USB key. The installer will continue once it has detected the correct key is plugged in
- Ask user for installation folder
- Present to user list of actions that the installer will perform. Installations starts when user clicks "Next"
- Installer attempts to detect any existing SIMetrix-SIMPLIS license manager NT services. If any are found that are exclusive to SIMetrix-SIMPLIS (that is not shared with other vendors applications), they will be stopped and removed.
- If test in step 1 was successful (i.e. an existing SIMetrix-SIMPLIS license manager was detected), the same test is repeated. If still successful, then an error message will be displayed and the installation will abort
- Files copied to selected folder
- Setup correct registry settings for license manager. Configured to put the license file and log file in the same folder as the license manager binaries
- Install NT service called "SIMetrix-SIMPLIS License Manager"
- License file is edited to set the correct hostname on the SERVER line
- Service started
- License manager tested. If successful, installation completes. If unsuccessful, an error message is displayed
