Introduction

This topic explains how to install models using quick instructions. This is aimed at users who are familiar with the basic concepts of simulation models but are unfamiliar with SIMetrix. The following assumes that you understand the basic syntax used for SPICE models, in particular the .SUBCKT statement used to define a sub-circuit.

For more detailed instructions, see Installing Models

Procedure

  1. Locate your model file or files using Windows Explorer or equivalent then drop them in the command shell message window. You will be asked to acknowledge the files dropped.
  2. In the schematic window select menu Place | From Model Library....

Important note for SIMPLIS users: if you are installing a SPICE model that you are intending to use in SIMPLIS mode (i.e. a convertible device such as a MOSFET or diode), you must carry out the procedure described here with the schematic switched to SIMetrix mode
  3. Select * Recently Added Models * in the left hand pane. You should see a list of the models you have just installed. If you can't see it there, look in * All User Models *. Select the device you wish to place from the right hand pane
  4. Press Place
  5. At this stage one of two things will happen.

    a) A schematic symbol outline will show ready to be placed on the schematic. If this happens, the procedure is complete

    OR

    b) A dialog box is displayed asking you for some information about the model. If this happens proceed to step 6
  6. Select a category from the drop down box at the top left. If a suitable category is not available you can create a new one using the New Category... button
  7. Choose a symbol to use for the model using one of these methods:

    a) If the part you wish to place is a generic item such as an opamp or power MOSFET you will almost certainly find a suitable symbol already in the library and you can select one from the drop down box at the top of the section titled Define Symbol for ???. You will need to check that the pins are in the correct order. The order shown in the Pin Order box must match the order of the terminals in the .SUBCKT line shown in the Electrical Model box at the bottom. Use the arrow keys to reorder if necessary

    OR

    b) If the part is specialised or you can't find a suitable symbol, press the Auto Create Symbol button. A functional symbol will be automatically created. Don't worry if the shape is not what you want as you can easily edit it later. SIMetrix will try and deduce meaningful pin names for the symbol by analysing the model's comment text. Sometimes, however, you may only see the names used for the terminals on the .SUBCKT line - which may just be numbers. You can edit these by pressing the Edit Pin Names... button
  8. Press OK then place symbol as usual. The model is ready for use.
  9. If you used the auto create symbol feature to create a new symbol, you may now edit it by selecting the symbol then right click popup menu Edit Symbol. You can edit the symbol's graphics or pin layout as desired but you should not change the "internal name" or edit any of the properties. You can add additional properties if you wish.
